The second season of Interview With The Vampire may well have been the best TV I've seen all year. Dark, funny and dripping in bloody atmosphere, it was an undead romance for the ages, buttressed by great performances from the likes of Jacob Anderson, Delainey Hayles and Sam Reid as the vampire Lestat, the most famous figure from Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles books.
If the second season had a weakness, it's that it didn't have enough of Lestat in it, although he made up for lost time by stealing the show when he returned near the end. And he will dominate the third season, which will adapt Rice's 1985 book The Vampire Lestat. AMC surprised fans at San Diego Comic-Con the other weekend with an early teaser showing Lestat, who becomes a world-famous rock star who sings about the deepest of vampire secrets, toying with interviewers. We even got an original song!
The musical landscape was very different back when The Vampire Lestat came out. Rock music isn't nearly the force it was, so how will the cast and crew update the music to make it sound like something which could get unbelievably popular in today's day in age?
By the sound of the original song, "Long Face," it doesn't seem like they're going to try; the song has a very 1970s/80s glam rock/punk feel to it. “I would say imagine Lestat with an iPad or whatever, going through the last 80 years of music,” showrunner Rolin Jones told TheWrap. “And ‘yes, yes, yes. No, no, yes, yes, this this this.’ He doesn’t have to be a man of 2026. He’s a man of the last 300 years, he has exquisite taste. And I think he knows how to deliver it.”
Sam Reid heartily agreed. “Look, he’s the vampire Lestat,” the actor said. “So like, you know, he’s the thing to be revered, he’s the thing to be feared. He’s the thing to be loved, he’s the thing to be hated. And, you know, in a time of extreme discourse, how do you stand out? I think, Lestat is one of those figures who is quite capable of making an impact without trying very hard.”
I fully agree. Why should Lestat conform himself to the tastes of the day? He's more the kind of guy to make everyone else conform to his tastes. I have no idea how the original music will be received when it comes out, but I know I've been humming "Long Face" since I heard it, and Jones is hoping for the best. “I think there’s probably secretly, in our hearts, the attempt to make an absolutely incredible double album that stands with everybody.”
Interview With The Vampire season 3 not coming out for two years?
I can't be the only one who noticed that Jones said Lestat doesn't have to be "a man of 2026." AMC hasn't given us a release date for Interview With The Vampire season 3 yet, but that comment suggests it won't be coming out for another two years.
That's consistent with the wait between seasons 1 and 2, which came out in 2022 and 2024 respectively. But since AMC put out the season 3 trailer so early, I was hoping that maybe they were stepping on the gas ahead of season 3. Couldn't we watch it next year, pretty please?
We'll follow up with this when AMC says something official. Until then, I'll keep hoping.
