Diego Luna promises more Rogue One characters in Andor season 2
By Dan Selcke
The first season of Star Wars: Andor was a wonder: a mature, thoughtful, tightly written drama about the nascent Rebel alliance, and the people who sacrificed everything to make it possible. No one has a lightsaber and no one uses the Force. The show criticizes the inhumanity of prisons and fascist bureaucracy. I didn't think the Star Wars franchise had a show like this in it. Maybe they should try making an R-rating Star Wars thing, so long as Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy has a hand in it.
And the whole show is a prequel to the Star Wars side story movie Rogue One, which came out in 2016 and made over a billion dollars at the box office. Next year, the second and final season will air on Disney+, and star Diego Luna previewed what little he could this past weekend at the ACE Superhero Comic Con, according to Pop Verse.
“I can tell you, Rogue One is coming, so there will be characters there that you will recognize," Luna revealed. "There will be cool stuff. For those who love Rogue One, this season is going to be very special. And it’s going to be fascinating to go straight to Rogue One after watching this second season, because you will see Rogue One from a different perspective. I promise you that.”
What characters from Rogue One could show up in Andor season 2?
Obviously, there are already characters from Rogue One in Andor, including the Imperial Senator Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly) and Cassian Andor himself. But there are plenty more that the show could bring in if it wanted. What about Jyn Erso, the hero of Rogue One, or her father, Galen Erso, whose research led to the creation of the Death Star superlaser? Or what about the funny, misanthropic droid K-2SO? Or the warrior Chirrut Îmwe, who is in tune with the Force but isn't a Jedi, preserving what I'm going to call the show's "No Jedi" rule. Long may it stick.
Star Wars TV shows have an up-and-down reputation. At the moment, fans are review-bombing the new show The Acolyte into the ground, so we'll call this a "down" period. That makes it all the more impressive that Andor has generated such excitement, particularly since anybody's who's seen Rogue One knows what happens to Cassian Andor at the end (PAUSE FOR SPOILERS): he dies stealing the plans for the Death Star.
“It’s fantastic,” Luna said of season 2. “The only thing I can tell you is what happens at the end. It’s the world upside down. That’s the only thing you don’t talk about in an interview, but here we all know what the end is. I can tell you one thing, Tony Gilroy is a fantastic writer, and he created amazing characters that we got to meet in Andor season one. It’s going to be a very rich second season, because all those stories matter today. It is a true ensemble piece. It got very complicated in season one, and everything has to get resolved. Every story matters.”
Expect the second season of Andor to air on Disney+ early in 2025.
