Since the premiere of The Mandalorian back in 2019, Disney has made approximately 30,000 Star Wars TV shows. The best has been Andor, a gritty look at the formation of the Rebel Alliance, with Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) at its center.
Cassian actually first appeared in the 2016 Star Wars movie Rogue One. I'll admit that I was at first skeptical about a prequel TV series all about a supporting character from a movie about a Star Wars subplot, but Andor impressed me with its character drama, its deliberate pacing, and its complete lack of Jedi or lightsabers. Sometimes it's nice to just hang with the ordinary people of the galaxy far, far away.
The second and final season of Andor will air on Disney+ sometime in 2025. According to Luna, it will make people look at Rogue One in a different way. “I think people watching Rogue One, after watching season 2, are going to see a different film," he told Entertainment Weekly. "Everything will be signified differently knowing what had to happen for K-2 to be there. It's going to make you witness the journey of Rogue One in a different way, I think. And not just with K-2, but with many other characters. I think it'll be really cool.”
"K-2" refers to K-2SO, a droid who helped Cassian and company spy on the Empire in Rogue One. He was a hilarious blunt robot played by Alan Tudyk, who's currently headlining the Syfy dramady Resident Alien. K-2 didn't appear in the first season of Andor, but will be back for the second. “What a problem, that droid,” Luna joked. “He has no filter. He just talks and says everything he's thinking.”
"It was delicious to get to work with Alan again and be on the same set with him. It just helps fulfill the full circle...You're going to see why K-2 is so important in Rogue One, and how does he get to be such an important character for the Rebellion."
I'm sure it'll be fun to see K-2SO back in action whenever Andor season 2 comes out. Given how the new episodes will lead directly into Rogue One, you also have to wonder if Disney might not rerelease the movie into theaters, at least in a limited capacity. That thought has crossed Luna's mind too. “I'm sure someone from Lucasfilm and Disney will give us the opportunity to watch season 2 and then go straight to watch the film on a big screen with tons of popcorn and friends around.”
