Do you need to watch the first two Quiet Place movies before A Quiet Place: Day One?

Although there are Easter eggs fans of the original movies will enjoy, you don't need to have seen either of the first two Quiet Place movies to enjoy this prequel.

Fans of the Quiet Place franchise can’t wait to quietly rush to theaters on Friday, June 28, to catch the latest movie in the series, A Quiet Place: Day One. But what about Quiet Place newbies? Are you wondering if you need to check out the first two movies before watching Day One? Here's what we know!

Though John Krasinski and Michael Sarnoski, the folks behind the original Quiet Place movie, came up with the story for A Quiet Place: Day One, this chapter is directed solely by Sarnoski. And this isn’t the only major change from the original movies. Day One has Easter eggs that fans of the first two Krasinski-directed movies will catch, but the story itself follows a new group of struggling survivors.

A Quiet Place: Day One sees Lupita Nyong’o take on the role of Samira, a young woman with terminal cancer who lives in a hospice outside of the city of New York. When an alien invasion strikes, Samira, her adorable cat Frodo, and their new friend Eric (Joseph Quinn) find themselves stranded in the loud and crowded streets of New York City.

Due to the new setting and the time the story takes place, audiences are able to see the mass destruction and carnage these extraterrestrial creatures are capable of. This is something we were not able to witness in the original installments.

A Quiet Place: Day One is for fans and newbies alike

In short, no, you do not need to stream John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place or A Quiet Place Part II to understand what is happening in Day One. Sarnoski’s movie may be a spinoff/prequel, but it also stands on its own just fine.

You don’t even need to know anything about the alien monsters to enjoy Day One. Though, spoiler alert, the aliens have an incredible sense of hearing. That’s really all you need to know, and the film explains it early on in the movie. As for the Easter eggs I mentioned above, there are a few, but they are not essential to the plot.

However, just because you don’t need to see the first two movies doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. After checking out Day One in theaters, I strongly recommend streaming A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part II. Both are available on Paramount+. Welcome to the Quiet Place fandom!
