Emilia Clarke gently shaded George R.R. Martin in gift to Game of Thrones showrunners
By Dan Selcke
Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have been in the news lately as they promote their new show 3 Body Problem, a sci-fi series coming to Netflix in March. While 3 Body Problem is the focus, outlets like The Hollywood Reporter can't resist asking them a few questions about the HBO fantasy phenomenon, and they've given some interesting responses.
For instance, here's something THR reporter James Hibberd learned during his sit-down with Benioff and Weiss: in their office, they display a huge knitted medieval tapestry meant to honor the creatives and crew behind Game of Thrones, given to them as a gift by Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen. The quilt has lots of inscriptions written on it, many of them bearing a touch of Clarke's playful humor. For instance, one inscription reads, "more blood, less clothes," appropriate for a show famed for its depictions of sex and violence.
There's also a sly, gentle, all-in-good-fun dig at A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin, who's writing the books on which Game of Thrones was based. The quilt references a "House Martin" as "unwritten." That's a nod to the fact that Martin has been writing the sixth book in his series, The Winds of Winter, for around 13 years at this point; the last book in the series, A Dance With Dragons, came out in 2011, the same year that Game of Thrones premiered, and he still hasn't finished the next one.
That is a sad factoid that all Song of Ice and Fire fans have had to deal with, but it's nice to see that Clarke and her coworkers can wring some humor out of it.
