Ewan McGregor would "love" to make Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2

Ewan McGregor has revealed that he'd absolutely "love" to return to the Star Wars Universe for Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2, but isn't sure whether it's happening.

Ewan McGregor has played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars franchise for over 20 years, spanning three movies — The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith — and one solo TV series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, which aired on Disney+ in 2022. If McGregor had his way, Kenobi's titular Disney+ show would return for a second season, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

McGregor's Star Wars projects have long been divisive among viewers, especially the prequel trilogy, which was famously panned by critics, and especially especially Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, although its reputation has been somewhat revived in recent years, thanks to the nostalgia factor. Looking back at the tough reception The Phantom Menace got upon its release in 1999, McGregor recalls it being a difficult time in his career.

“I am happy that I am this character for a lot of people, but when these films came out, they were so disliked," he told Variety. "That was hard. The first one was panned and we still had to make another two! It was weird to be in a film that was hammered.”

However, after allowing over a decade to let the prequel movies settle, McGregor marked his triumphant return to the franchise in Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi series, which had a decent reception on release. Currently, Disney has not green-lit season 2, but McGregor is totally down to reprise his role if the opportunity comes knocking. “I would love to do the second season, but there’s no talk of it yet," he said. "There is a lot going on at Disney.”

It's quite concerning that Disney has not renewed the Obi-Wan Kenobi series yet, given that it's been almost two years since it first aired. For instance, Ahsoka, The Mandalorian and Andor were all renewed for new seasons soon after they premiered.

Of course, the Star Wars universe always has something in development. Coming up in 2024 we have The Acolyte and Skeleton Crew.
