Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (December 20, 2024)

Sonic the Hedgehog has been running around even longer than Lara Croft, and has made his fair share of onscreen appearances over the years. But something changed with 2020’s live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie. The film itself is a light action-adventure story, but where as in years past Paramount Pictures might not have put much effort into the production, here they did it right, casting big names like Jim Carrey, James Marsden and eventually Idris Elba in key roles.

The first movie was a big success, and the 2022 sequel even more so. Paramount has a proper film franchise on its hands, a family-friendly special effects-laden spectacular it intends to milk dry!

The milking will continue with Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which will feature the return of the impressive cast (anchored by Ben Schwartz as Sonic himself), and add a newcomer as Shadow, Sonic’s edgier, darker nemesis from the games. It’s good to be in the Sonic business these days.

Sonic Prime season 3, Netflix (January 11)

See what I mean? Although not nearly as high profile as the movies, Sonic has had an animated Netflix series running for two seasons now. You may not even have heard of it, but the third and final season of Sonic Prime is coming out right around the corner, proving that video game characters like Sonic have a lot of potential when it comes to franchising. They can star in movies and TV shows, feature in novels and comic books, take prize places on shelves in the form of action figures and collectibles, and of course, be at the player’s command in video games.
