Video game movies and TV shows: 2025 and forever

So far as video game adaptations go, 2024 is just the beginning. Hollywood is working on a slew of video game adaptations. There are movies coming based on games like The Legend of Zelda, Minecraft and Death Stranding. There are TV shows in development inspired by God of War and Horizon: Zero Dawn. A second season of The Last of Us is in the works, and you know Nintendo will want to follow up on the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Sequels to Mortal Kombat and Detective Pikachu are also on the way.

Once upon a time, video game adaptations were synonymous with cringey failure. The first Mario Bros. movie, released in 1993, set a very low bar that studios didn’t much bother trying to clear for decades after. But now things are different. Studios are now staffed with people who grew up playing video games, and the industry itself is too big for Hollywood to ignore, making hundreds of billions of dollars every year. They’re not a niche interest; they’re mainstream, and they can’t be contained in one format.

For over a decade now, Hollywood has fallen back on superhero movies as their reliable moneymakers. But as interest in superheroes starts to wane, video game are well positioned to supply studios with a wealth of source material. And unlike superhero stories, video games are diverse enough to ensure that adaptations will remain popular for a long time, probably indefinitely. There are only so many ways to tell a superhero story. But video game adaptations run the gamut, from family-friendly larks like The Super Mario Bros. Movie to intense prestige dramas like The Last of Us. Hollywood preoccupation with superheroes was a trend, albeit a long-lived one. But video games can provide studios with source material in the same way that books do: with infinite variety. I don't see the coming wave of video game adaptations as a trend; I see them as a permanent fixture.
