Game of Thrones cast members reunite at screening for 3 Body Problem
By Dan Selcke
Netflix is about to drop the first season of 3 Body Problem, a new sci-fi series based on the Remembrance of Earth's Past novel trilogy by Liu Cixin. In brief, the show is about humanity's first contact with an extraterrestrial species, although you can find out the details for yourself later this week.
3 Body Problem comes from producers Alexander Woo, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the latter two of whom are best known for creating the fantasy phenomenon Game of Thrones for HBO. For their new show, they've recruited a few Game of Thrones alumni, some of whom reunited at a recent screening of the show:
That's John Bradley (Sam Tarly), Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth) and Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei) hanging out years after the end of Game of Thrones. Bradley and Cunningham are both in 3 Body Problem, while Emmanuel is here just to support her old buddies.
Let's go over all the Game of Thrones veterans you can expect to see on the new Netflix show:
John Bradley (Sam Tarly) as Jack Rooney in 3 Body Problem
In Game of Thrones, John Bradley played Sam Tarly, the brainy Night's Watchmen who helped his friend Jon Snow out of many a jam. In 3 Body Problem, Bradley plays Jack Rooney, an Oxford graduate and science whiz who used his knowledge to create a successful snack food company.
While Sam and Jack are both intelligent, Jack is a lot less shy and a lot more brash than Sam ever was, especially in the early going. The show gives Bradley a chance to crack wiser than he ever got to on Game of Thrones.
Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth) as Thomas Wade
We all remember the kindly, wise Davos Seaworth from Game of Thrones, advisor to two kings and all-around sensible guy. On 3 Body Problem, he plays Thomas Wade, a government operative who's determined to protect the planet Earth at any cost.
Thomas Wade is a good deal more ruthless than Davos ever was, although he retains Davos' cunning.
Jonathan Pryce (the High Sparrow) as Robert Evans
Finally, Benioff and Weiss brought along legendary actor Jonathan Pryce, who recently gained plaudits for playing Prince Philip on the Netflix show The Crown, to play Robert Evans, a mysterious industrialist at the heart of a conspiracy our main characters must unravel. On Game of Thrones, he played the religious leader the High Sparrow, the one who forces Cersei Lannister to go on her Walk of Shame.
If 3 Body Problem gets renewed for a second and third season, which is about how long it would need to run for Benioff and Weiss to adapt the whole story, we may see more Game of Thrones alumni turn up. The first season of 3 Body Problem drops on Netflix this Thursday, March 21.
