Game of Thrones creator wants to revive canceled Prime Video show My Lady Jane
By Dan Selcke
A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin has been blogging a lot lately. We've been bowled over by some of his blunt criticisms of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel show House of the Dragon, but it hasn't been all about drama. A lover of all books, movies and TV, Martin also talked about some of the media he's been enjoying lately, including the canceled Prime Video show My Lady Jane.
Based on a book of the same name by author Jodi Meadows, My Lady Jane is about the life of Lady Jane Grey, who was technically queen of England for nine days before being deposed and eventually executed. Or...well, it's kind of about Lady Jane Grey if she lived in an alternate reality version of 15th century England occupied by shapeshifting people called Ethians.
The show quickly found a passionate fanbase, but Prime Video canceled it shortly after season 1 dropped in June. The fans have put together a Change.org petition hoping to get the show renewed. It's got nearly 70,000 signatures of this time, and now that a high-profile person like George R.R. Martin voices his support, it could well go beyond that.
"Speaking of television shows, I have always loved alternate history and Jane Grey, England’s nine-days queen, has always fascinated me," Martin wrote on his blog. "Small wonder, then, that I really enjoyed MY LADY JANE, a clever and original historical fantasy on Amazon Prime, set in an England full of witches and shapechangers, where Jane lasts more than nine days."
"Meredith Glynn is one of the showrunners. I had the pleasure of working with her on one of the GAME OF THRONES spinoffs that HBO shelved a few years back, and knowing her talents, it did not surprise me that MY LADY JANE was so much fun."
Meredith Glynn served as showrunner on My Lady Jane alongside Gemma Burgess. This is the first we're hearing of Glynn having worked on a Game of Thrones spinoff show, of which there have been several in various stages of development over the years. A lot of them are still in the pipeline, like a show about Aegon Conqueror, another about Corlys Velaryon, and an animated show about the Golden Empire of Yi Ti.
A couple others were in development at one time but have been shelved, including a Jon Snow sequel show and a series set in the Flea Bottom slum of King's Landing. I can't imagine that Glynn was involved in the Jon Snow sequel show, which was brought to HBO's attention by actor Kit Harington. I wonder if she was involved in the Flea Bottom show?
In any case, she moved onto My Lady Jane, which got the axe. Shows have been revived before, so if you're a fan of this one, feel free to sign.
