Godzilla Minus One is the most streamed thing of the past week, as it should be

Godzilla Minus One dominates the streaming charts in early June, proving you don't need to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to make a great, emotional action movie with tons of special effects.

Godzilla has been tromping across the silver screen for decades at this point, and has always had an audience ready and willing to watch him stomp cities to dust. But in 2023, he had an underdog success story in the form of Godzilla Minus One. Whereas most of the recent successful Godzilla movies have been made by Warner Bros. Discovery in Hollywood, Godzilla Minus One came from Toho, the studio that began Godzilla's journey way back with the 1954 original movie. The story was once again situated firmly in Japan, in this case in the immediate aftermath of World War II. The movie had lots of heart and danger, and was made for a mere $15 million, chump change next to the $135 million WBD spent on this year's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. I'm not saying that Godzilla Minus One is a better movie, but it certainly feels more unique, and the fact that it looks as good as it does despite being made for a ninth of the budget as Godzilla x Kong makes you wonder if Hollywood is spending money wrong.

Anyway, it was fun to see Godzilla Minus One do so well despite its disadvantages. And people are still discovering it. The movie became available to stream on Netflix early this month, and according to Reelgood became the most-streamed movie or TV show of the week from May 30 - June 5 2024.
