House of the Dragon makes its mark during the biggest week for streaming TV EVER
By Dan Selcke
The week of July 1-7 marked the biggest week for streaming TV since Nielsen started measuring viewership, according to Deadline. All in all, people streamed shows and movies for over 313 billion minutes over the long weekend, with each entry in the top list all breaking a billion minutes watched. Check out the top 10 below:
- Beverly Hills Cop: Alex F (Netflix, 2.05 billion minutes watched)
- Suits (Netflix, 1.496 billion minutes)
- House of the Dragon (Max, 1.296 billion minutes)
- Your Honor (Netflix/Paramount+, 1.228 billion minutes)
- The Bear (Hulu, 1.206 bilion minutes)
- Dexter (Netflix/Paramount+, 1.202 billion minutes)
- The Boys (Amazon, 1.125 billion minutes)
- Bluey (Disney+, 1,09 billion minutes)
- Family Affair (Netflix, 1.05 billion minutes)
- Grey's Anatomy (Hulu/Netflix, 1.018 billion minutes)
There's a mix of old standbys and new shows on the list. Series like Suits have been blowing up on Netflix for a while, and never underestimate the popularity of kids shows like Bluey; parents everywhere are happy to let the blue dog entertain their children for hours on end. But there's original stuff on here too; the Netflix movie Beverly Hills Cop: Alex F absolutely crushed it, the latest season of The Boys on Amazon is its most successful yet, and HBO is packing them in to watch the second season of its Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon. If you're wondering, this week spanned the third episode of the season, "The Burning Mill," to the fourth, "The Red Dragon and the Gold."
It's good to see House of the Dragon still reaching an appreciative audience. Although if there's one thing this chart shows, it's the enduring power of Netflix. Old shows like Suits and Dexter rocket up the charts once they appear on the streaming service thanks to its massive subscriber base. It's just hard to beat.
And of course, it goes to show that streaming TV is getting ever more popular. This is the biggest week for it yet recorded, but I'm betting that record will be broken again and again as more people cut the cord and embrace an all-streaming future.
