House of the Dragon season 2 episode is the longest in the show's history

The second season of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel show House of the Dragon premieres on Sunday, June 16, and we're hearing some very interesting things about what's in store.
To wit: we know how long the first and second episodes will be. The first episode, entitled "A Son for a Son," will be around 1 hour and four minutes long, 64 minutes. That's about in line with the length of episodes from season 1; those ran as short as 54 minutes and as long as 67.
HBO has now posted some information about the second episode of the new season on its official schedule. We don't have a title yet, but we now that it will run for one hour and 12 minutes, or 72 minutes total. That makes it the longest episode of House of the Dragon yet produced.

- Episode 201: June 16 (1 hour, 4 minutes)
- Episode 202: June 23 (1 hour, 12 minutes)
- Episode 203: June 30
- Episode 204: July 07
- Episode 205: July 14
- Episode 206: July 21
- Episode 207: July 28
- Episode 208: August 04
We expect the first couple of episodes of the season to deal with the aftermath of the season 1 finale, where Rhaenyra Targaryen's half-brother Aemond killed her young son Lucerys, ensuring that there would be war between these two rival factions of the Targaryen dynasty. Rhaenyra's husband Daemon will take revenge against Aemond's family. Without giving away spoilers, things will get very bloody, and I'm not surprised it might take 72 minutes to sort through it.
We also know that characters will be more spread out over the map in season 2, which could account for the longer runtime. For instance, Rhaenyra's son Jace will spend time in the North trying to woo the young Lord Cregan Stark to her mother's side of the war. Things are just gonna get bigger in season 2.
Finally, we note that while the first season of House of the Dragon had 10 episodes, the second season has only eight. Having a longer episode might take some of the sting out of getting slightly fewer episodes this year. We'll see if the trend of longer episodes continues as we learn more.
