The second season House of the Dragon just wrapped up, and HBO is looking forward to squeezing more money out of the new episodes around the holiday season. To that end, they're releasing all eight episodes of season 2 on home video, in three different versions: 4K Ultra HD Limited Edition Steelbook, 4K Ultra HD National Standard Edition, a Blu-ray addition, and a DVD version. Each comes with four discs, subtitles, and so forth.

The big news with these releases are always the special features. This new set has two:

  • Family Tree: Westerosi family ties can be confusing. This primer will help viewers keep track of the complex and far-reaching branches of House Targaryen.
  • Divided Kingdoms: Join Co-Creator/Showrunner/Executive Producer Ryan Condal and the cast and crew as they provide an overview of Season 2 and a glimpse of the war to come.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there are any deleted scenes included in this release, which personally is the thing that I'm always most interested in. There's no mention of episode commentaries or a blooper reel, either. The set is pretty bare-bones, much like the home video release of the first season. According to Billboard, the set does come with cards of each major character, which is nice, I suppose. Maybe kids will trade Rhaenyra and Alicent cards at school.

I dunno, if HBO wants me to be interested in these sets they'll have to soup them up a bit, but it's cool that the show is being released in a physical format at all; that's not always a guarantee these days. You can download the digital versions of these sets now, and the physical versions are available for preorder. They'll drop on November 19.

Meanwhile, the cast and crew are already at work on a third season of House of the Dragon, with a fourth and final one to follow after that. New episodes aren't likely to drop until 2026. In the meanwhile, HBO will air a new Game of Thrones prequel series called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, coming in 2025.
