James Cameron says Avatar 3 is a "tougher ride" than Avatars 1 and 2

If the wars of Pandora in the first two Avatar movies weren't enough, James Cameron promises an even tougher ride for the characters in Avatar 3.

Whether you love them or not, there's no denying that James Cameron's Avatar franchise is a behemoth in the film industry. The first two movies have collectively earned over $2 billion at the box office, becoming two of the three highest-grossing movies ever created. There's certainly hype for the upcoming threequel, and Cameron is confident that it will deliver the best adventure yet.

The first movie saw the Na'vi and the humans go to war for the moon of Pandora, while the sequel continued the saga with a bigger focus on family. While we don't know exactly what will go down in the third movie, Cameron has revealed that it'll continue to develop the world, and put characters in more danger than ever before.

"It's just a continuation of the epic," he said, per Mama's Geeky. "You'll see new environments, new characters. The characters that you know and love will be challenged even more, and go through some trials and tribulations."

Additionally, he warned fans that the action is a step up from Avatar 2. "I think it's going to be a tougher ride than A2, in a good way."

Originally set for release later this year, Avatar 3 was pushed back to 2025. The movie has already wrapped shooting, having filmed concurrently with Avatar 2: The Way of Water. However, for movies like this, post-production takes a long time. Given the actors and writers strikes in 2023, the delays make sense.

While plot details are very much under wraps, we know that the third movie will introduce new Na'vi tribes, including a volcano-based group called the Ash People. Naturally, this has prompted theories that the threequel will be subtitled The Way of Fire, though nothing has been confirmed.

Producer Jon Landau has previously revealed that each of the sequels will focus on a specific Na'vi culture. “Each movie, we introduce new biomes and new cultures, and because we’re introducing new cultures, we have new characters," he told Inverse.

Avatar 3 is scheduled to come out on December 19, 2025. James Cameron plans to release a bunch of further sequels all the way up to Avatar 5, which is slated to air sometime in 2031. Tha Avatar universe is here to stay.
