Jennifer Lawrence sent congratulations to Josh Hutcherson over Five Nights at Freddy's success
By Dan Selcke
Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson last starred together in 2015's The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, but they remain on texting terms. When Hutcherson's movie Five Nights at Freddy's, based on the video game series of the same name, hit it big at the box office last year, Lawrence was quick to congratulate her former co-star. "Jen texted me when Freddy’s came out,” Hutcherson told Variety. “She was like, ‘My movie’s #1 on Netflix, and yours is #1 at the box office! Let’s go!’ I was like, ‘I love you!'”
Lawrence is talking about her Netflix film No Hard Feelings, which did indeed make a splash on Netflix. But it's hard to quantify the success of Netflix movies. Five Nights at Freddy's made nearly $300 million at the box office on a budget of $20 million, which basically guarantees a sequel.
That said, no announcement has been made, although Hutcherson will be ready to go back and face down more evil animatronic monsters the second it happens. "I’m dying to get back on set. Emma Tammi, our director, was fantastic, and it was such a fun world to play in. I’m excited to see what they are doing next,” he said.
Josh Hutcherson "hopeful" about a Five Nights at Freddy's sequel movie
The Five Nights at Freddy's games are horror games where players must survive being locked in a Chuck E. Cheese-like family restaurant together with murderous animatronic animals; in the movie, Hutcherson plays the security guard given the unenviable task of watching over the place at night, and you can guess how that goes. The games have a ton of lore that fans eagerly dive into, so there was a built-in audience from the start. "You know, the FNaF fan base is massive, so the game's huge and everything—but they knocked it out of the park, really nailing the tone of it," Hutcherson said during a visit to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Again, all of this indicates that there's a Five Nights at Freddy's sequel movie in our future (if it were up to me I'd call it Six Nights at Freddy's, but I'm sure that's not canonical so just ignore me). It's almost weird that we haven't heard anything yet. "Nothing's official, but I'm hopeful," Hutcherson said. "It's a cool world. It did pretty well. We'll see!"
