Maisie Williams recently rewatched Game of Thrones as an adult, and has a new perspective

"I just feel like when it was coming out, I was not even really, like, sentient yet. I sat down and watched the whole thing and finally now feel like I have perspective on it."

Game of Thrones fans will always remember Maisie Williams as Arya Stark, the little girl who started the show as an underfoot tomboy and ended it an avenging angel. But for the 26-year-old Williams, looking back on that period of her life is strange. She wasn't even a teenager yet when she was cast and basically grew up on the set of the fantasy drama. It's only now she feels like she has perspective on the show.

She talked through some of these feelings during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, revealing that she rewatched the whole series after HBO premiered the prequel show House of the Dragon. “Obviously House of the Dragon came back, and I think like a lot of people I was like, ‘Let me sit down and watch Game of Thrones again,’" she said. "I just feel like when it was coming out, I was not even really, like, sentient yet. I sat down and watched the whole thing and finally now feel like I have perspective on it."

"I was devastated when Ned [Stark] died. I was like, "I can’t believe that they did that." It feels like a different time in my life, like it’s not me a little bit. So I got to watch it kind of for the first time."

Since then, Williams has moved on to other roles in shows like The New Look, a historical drama that premiered this week on Apple TV+. She plays Catherine Dior, the sister of fashion designer Christian Dior and a fighter in the French resistance during World War II. There's a clip towards the end of the Fallon interview where she shows off her French accent:

Maisie Williams: It would be "so cool" to return to Doctor Who as Ashildr

Most actors don't have a vast onscreen catalog by the time they're 26, but Williams isn't most actors. In addition to her role on Game of Thrones, she also appeared on Doctor Who alongside Peter Capaldi as the immortal Ashildr. Plenty of fans have wondered whether we might get an Arya Stark spinoff to Game of Thrones one day, but what about Williams returning to her Doctor Who role?

"I’d love to work with [new Doctor Ncuti Gatwa], that would be so cool," Williams told Collider. "I actually had never even [thought] about —People are always asking me about Arya, that no one asks me about Ashildr. So maybe!I would love that, yeah that would be cool.”

New episodes of Doctor Who will start airing later this year. You can stream The New Look on Apple TV+ right now.
