Nearly 10 years after the release of author N.K. Jemisin's groundbreaking novel The Fifth Season, the Broken Earth trilogy is getting a stunning new deluxe edition box set. Jemisin has written plenty of books in her career, but is still perhaps best known for The Broken Earth trilogy, which tell the story of a woman named Essun who is searching for her daughter on a world which is prone to periodic climate catastrophes, the titular "Fifth Season." Essun is an orogene, which means she can manipulate earth, stone and tectonic energy — an ability which has caused orogenes to be ruthlessly oppressed by those who fear their power.

The first novel in the series, The Fifth Season, released back in 2015. It was followed by The Obelisk Gate in 2016 and The Stone Sky in 2017. Beyond just being excellent, well-loved books, The Broken Earth trilogy is especially notable because Jemisin won the Hugo Award for Best Novel three years in a row, one for each book. As of this writing, she's still the only author to ever claim that honor.

On November 19th, you can add it to your shelves in an especially beautiful collector's edition, pictured above. The Broken Earth Gold Edition set is being released from Orbit, with art direction and design by Lauren Panepinto and an exclusive box illustration by Justin Cherry.

What comes in The Broken Earth Gold Edition set?

The books themselves are fabric-bound hardcover editions, with brand new foil-stamped cover designs. Each comes with gilded silver page edges, colored endpaper art, and a ribbon bookmark. The set also includes a few extra exciting exclusives, first and foremost an extra bonus scene from The Fifth Season. So whether you've read this series before or this is your first time diving into Jemisin's science fantasy world, you can get the complete package.

The box set retails for $180, which is fairly pricy, so this is one for the collectors. But right now Orbit's parent publisher Hachette is running a 20% off sale on the series when you preorder the Gold Edition from their website, which works out to $144, just under $50 per book. Plus, if you preorder, you'll also get a signed version of The Fifth Season in the set.

I'm a huge fan of publishers letting readers choose the amount they want to spend on books for different editions, and it goes without saying that The Broken Earth is very deserving of this sort of special edition treatment. If you love N.K. Jemisin's writing, this is one you won't want to miss.

The Broken Earth Gold Edition set releases on November 19th. You can order it now, directly from Hachette.
