Percy Jackson and the Olympians cast and crew hold out hope for season 2
By Dan Selcke
The first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, based on YA book series by Rick Riordan, is currently airing on Disney+; we have one more episode to go before wrapping up. The show has pulled strong numbers, with 572 million minutes viewerd for the first two episodes That strong viewership also landed the series in the Top 10 Nielsen chart ratings for the week of Dec. 18, with 572 million minutes viewed for the two-episode premiere the week after it dropped. With those kinds of ratings, you'd figure the show was a shoo-in for renewal, no?
Well, that news may be imminent, but there's been no official announcement from Disney as of yet. Speaking to TV Line, showrunner Jon Steinberg sounded hopeful but non-committal. "I think everybody’s really focused on making sure that people have the reaction to the show that we’re hoping they will," he said. "There are some people that spend their day thinking about what next season would look like, so hopefully, that work will become a little more official sooner than later."
The show is led by a trio of young actors, so the sooner work starts on a new season, the better, lest they grow up past the point where they can convince us that they're of middle school age.
Cast member Toby Stephens, who plays Percy's father Poseidon, the Greek god of the oceans, said he "hasn't heard anything" about season 2 yet, but took the role understanding that it could be a recurring thing:
"I entered into it knowing… both Jon [Steinberg ] and [executive producer Dan Shotz] said, "Well, you know, he’s a recurring character." When I read the scripts that they’d sent me, I thought, "This is really nice." It’s something that will be fun to do, and it’s obviously a huge privilege to be part of such a much-loved franchise that means so much to so many people."
Unless Disney knows something very damaging that we don't, it seems likely that Percy Jackson and the Olympians will be renewed for season 2. The season 1 finale, "The Prophecy Comes True," airs tomorrow night on Disney+. If you want to see more, tune in!
