Percy Jackson and the Olympians officially returning for season 2

The next book to adapt is The Sea of Monsters, which will be a great fit for the Percy Jackson showrunners since they were also behind the pirate show Black Sails.

Disney executives shared news with investors on an earnings call today, including a tidbit that should please fans of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, the Disney+ fantasy show based on the Percy Jackson books by Rick Riordan: the series is officially returning for season 2!

“I can’t wait to bring the next season of Percy Jackson to Disney+!,” Riordan said in a statement, according to Deadline. “Raise anchors. Hoist the mainsail. All hands on deck, demigods. We’re heading for the Sea of Monsters!”

The next book in Riordan's vast series is The Sea of Monsters, which will have a lot of scenes set on the ocean. That makes sense; Percy is the son of the sea god Poseidon, after all.

This will be a return to form of sorts for showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, both of whom previously worked on the pirate show Black Sails on Starz. "Lots of boats. We’re going back to our Black Sails days," Shotz joked recently. And Steinberg said they can "for sure" apply what they learned on Black Sails to Percy Jackson season 2. "Despite the fact that I swore I’d never do ships or ocean again, somehow the universe has put the lie to that. But there’s so much that you learn from spending all that time on the water. You can’t help it pick up some things. So we’re to the good in that direction at least."

According to Disney estimates, season 1 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians was streamed for more than 110 million hours, which sounds high enough to renew the thing. Congrats to the cast and crew! We probably won't see episodes for quite a while but it's good to know that things are moving.
