The other week, HBO dropped a pair of trailers for the second season of House of the Dragon, its Game of Thrones prequel series. We also know when the first episode will air: Sunday, June 16. Which is Father's Day, incidentally. I don't know if that means anything but it's a fun detail.

We know that the second season of House of the Dragon will have eight episodes. And unlike Netflix, which drops every episode of a new season of TV at once; or even Amazon Prime Video, which has a habit of releasing the first few episodes of a season up top and letting the remaining episodes roll out at a rate of one per week, HBO kicks things old school: one episode per week, no more or less.

That means we know exactly when each episode will drop on HBO and Max. Here's the schedule below:

  • Episode 201: June 16
  • Episode 202: June 23
  • Episode 203: June 30
  • Episode 204: July 07
  • Episode 205: July 14
  • Episode 206: July 21
  • Episode 207: July 28
  • Episode 208: August 04

When last we left our "heroes" on House of the Dragon, Aemond Targaryen had killed his nephew Lucerys Velaryon while the two of them were on dragonback. This mightily ticked off Luke's mother Rhaenyra Targaryen, who up until then was trying to keep a lid on the simmering tensions between her and her half-brother Aegon, both of whom have claims to the Iron Throne. Now that Aegon's brother had killed her son, the gloves are off. This means war.

All things considered, June 16 is earlier than we expected to be watching House of the Dragon again. It's good to see that the show is confident. Let's hope it takes the ball it picked up in season 1 and runs with it.
