Prime VIdeo's animated adaptation of Robert Kirkman's Invincible comic has proven itself one of the very best superhero shows out there. After season 2 wrapped up earlier this year, fans are now expecting another gruelling wait for season 3, but according to Kirkman, our patience won't be tested as much this time around.

Season 1 of Invincible premiered in March 2021, and season 2 didn't hit screens until November 2023. And even when season 2 did premiere, we only got half the season; fans had to wait several months for the final four episodes. Clearly, the process of making animation takes precious time. However, looking ahead to future seasons, the production has been streamlined and the pieces are in place to make everything more efficient.

In fact, Kirkman recently revealed that Prime Video will even drop a release date for Invincible season 3 as early as later this year. Gone are the days of over two-year waits. "I'll say that you'll definitely know when it's going to air in 2024. So that's something, that's information," he said during San Diego Comic-Con, per The Direct.

""I've said this before. And unfortunately, this is like a sum total of what I'm allowed to say currently. But there's a big gap between 'Invincible’ Season 1 and Season 2. That sucked; I didn't like it; nobody else liked it. It's no fun. But you know, animation is hard. And so it takes time.""

The fact that Prime Video renewed Invincible for seasons 2 and 3 at the same time has been a major benefit to the team. There was no waiting around; the creative team were able to work on seasons 2 and 3 back-to-back.

"The reason we got this Season 2 and Season 3 pickup back-to-back... is because Amazon is committed to giving us the runway to try and produce these shows at a faster clip," Kirkman explained. "And to be able to do that, you have to be able to plan long-term, and on multiple seasons at the same time because it takes three years from start to finish to do a season of animation. So, you have to stagger them and weave them together in a really complicated way so that they can be released quickly."

Prime Video is enthusiastic about building out the Invincible universe. Spinoffs are already being discussed, and of course, the main show has already been renewed for season 4. While season 3 doesn't have a release date yet, early 2025 seems like a good estimate. In the meantime, you can read the comics to get ahead of the curve!
