Like it or not, director James Cameron's Avatar franchise is massive. The numbers speak for themselves. Both Avatar and its sequel The Way of Water are in the top three highest grossing movies of all-time, taking up the first and third places respectively.

The series isn't ending anytime soon. The Avatar franchise is a super long-term project for Cameron, starting when the first movie came out in 2009. We're getting sequels all the way through Avatar 5, which is currently slated to premiere sometime in 2031. But let's not get ahead of ourselves; next up is Avatar 3, set for 2025. The threequel will commence filming in a month, and according to star Sam Worthington (Jake Sully), it's the biggest production so far.

“We go back to work on it in a month and it's big,” Worthington told PEOPLE. “It's bigger than you can imagine.”

James Cameron says Avatar 3 is "right on track"

Avatar 3 was originally meant to premiere in December 2024. However, production was delayed by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, so it is now set to hit theatres on December 19, 2025. Despite the delays, James Cameron has revealed that the movie is in a good place. In fact, the team managed to shoot scenes for Avatar 3 during the production of The Way of Water. "We did the capture on three and the live-action photography on three as an intermingled production with [Avatar: The Way of Water]," he said.

That's not all, either. Scenes were also shot for the fourth installment. "We even did part of movie four because our young characters are all going to have a big time jump in movie four," Cameron revealed.

The hope now is for the team to streamline the production and avoid more hurdles, because filming The Way of Water was a nightmare. "Two, we got hit with the pandemic in the middle of it and we were interrupted, and then we had to reboot the production and all that sort of thing. And it was a scramble to get it done," Cameron said.

Avatar has one hell of a complicated production. If anyone can get it done, it's James Cameron.
