Shōgun breaks Game of Thrones record at Creative Arts Emmys, sets sights on main Emmys

Shōgun is the darling of the Emmys this year, and has already beat out Game of Thrones' record for most-Creative-Arts-Emmys-won-in-a-single-year. Next up is the Primetime Emmys.

Shōgun, based on James Clavell's book of the same name, rocked everyone's faces clean off when it aired on FX and Hulu earlier this year. An epic tale of war and struggle in 17th century Japan, the show was so successful that FX is going ahead with a second season, even though the first season covered the whole of Clavell's book.

We'll see how that turns out down the line. For now, it's awards season, and everyone is eager to celebrate Shōgun. This past weekend marked the Creative Arts Emmys, which are like the normal Emmys expect they give out awards for things people don't usually care as much about. Shōgun took home fully 14 awards, including:

  • Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series
  • Outstanding Cinematography for a Series (One Hour)
  • Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series (for Néstor Carbonell)
  • Outstanding Main Title Design
  • Outstanding Period or Fantasy/Sci-Fi Hairstyling
  • Outstanding Period or Fantasy/Sci-Fi Makeup (Non-Prosthetic)
  • Outstanding Period Costumes for a Series
  • Outstanding Picture Editing for a Drama Series
  • Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program (One Hour or More)
  • Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup
  • Outstanding Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour)
  • Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour)
  • Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Season or a Movie
  • Outstanding Stunt Performance

For good measure, the documentary movie The Making of Shōgun took home the award for Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series.

Previously, the record for most Creative Arts Emmys won in a single night was set by Game of Thrones, which took home 10 awards in 2019 for its controversial final season. With 14 awards, Shōgun has beat that. Game of Thrones took home an additional two Emmys at the main Emmy ceremony shortly thereafter, bringing its total haul to 12 Emmys in one year. Shōgun has bested that as well, and likely add to its lead when the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards air on ABC this upcoming Sunday, September 15.

I'm especially hoping that Anna Sawai will snag the Outstanding Lead Actress award for playing Lady Mariko. Here's what the show is up for at the main Emmys show this weekend:

  • Outstanding Drama Series
  • Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (for Hiroyuki Sanada)
  • Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series (for Anna Sawai)
  • Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (for Tadanobu Asano)
  • Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series
  • Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series

Now that I've slobbered all over Shōgun, let's congratulate a couple other series that did well at the Creative Arts Emmys, including Star Wars: Ahsoka, which took home an aware for fantasy/sci-fi costumes:

Other shows that took home multiple awards included The Bear, Only Murders in the Building and Saturday Night Live. Congrats and good luck!
