Shrek 5 is officially on the way!
By Ashley Hurst
Sure, here at Winter is Coming, we focus on the dark and gritty fantasy world of Game of Thrones, but when a fifth Shrek movie is announced out of nowhere, we can't simply ignore it. We see your Prince Charming and Jaime Lannister comparisons. They're coming back.
In the not so far, far away year of 2026, everyone's favorite Ogre will make his triumphant return to the big screen. This announcement took everyone by surprise. We already knew that Eddie Murphy was set to return for a Donkey spinoff, but Shrek 5 always seemed like it wasn't gonna happen anytime soon. At least, not as soon as July 1, 2026.
The Shrek franchise has cemented itself as one of the finest animated film series of all time. The original Shrek released in 2001, winning the first Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film. Shrek 2 came out three years later, unironically becoming one of the greatest sequels ever made. The subsequent Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After didn't quite have the same cultural impact, but performed well at the box office nonetheless. The spinoff Puss in Boots movies were big successes, too.
Plot details for Shrek 5 are currently under wraps. What we do know, however, is that all our favorites will return: Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are all set to reprise their roles.
In a recent interview with Collider, star Eddie Murphy (the voice of Donkey) revealed that he's been working on the fifth instalment for a few months. "I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up," he revealed.
Funnily enough, during this week's announcements, we learned that Shrek 5 and Toy Story 5 will premiere in the same month in 2026. Stand aside, Barbenheimer. Shrek 5 premieres July 1, 2026.
