If we cast our minds back to 2021, you'll remember that a Korean survival drama called Squid Game landed on Netflix. The series followed a group of cash-strapped contestants all taking part in children's games, with the winner taking home an enormous cash prize. However, these aren't just any games: if you don't win, you die.
Squid Game quickly became a global phenomenon, breaking all sorts of records. Its release saw an enormous 111 million viewers tune in, with over 1.65 billion hours viewed in all. If anything is going to shatter these records, it's going to be Squid Game season 2, which premieres on Netflix later this year.
Squid Game was promptly renewed following its immense debut season. Additionally, Netflix further cashed in on the success of the property by creating a real-life game show Squid Game: The Challenge, which aired last year and has already been renewed for another season. There are even video games in development. But it's the continuation of Seong Gi-hun's story that fans are most excited about.
Per Variety, in a letter to shareholders, Netflix previewed some of the most anticipated series coming to the platform this year, with Squid Game season 2 included on the list:
"Looking ahead, despite last year’s strikes pushing back the launch of some titles, we have a big, bold slate for 2024. Audiences will be able to choose from hit returning dramas like ‘The Diplomat’ S2, ‘Bridgerton’ S3, ‘Squid Game’ S2 and ‘Empress’ S2; unscripted series like ‘Tour de France: Unchained’ S2,’ Love is Blind’ S6, ‘F1: Drive to Survive’ S6 and ‘Full Swing’ S2; and brand new shows like ‘3 Body Problem’ (based on the best selling novel and from the ‘Game of Thrones’ showrunners), ‘Griselda’ (starring Sofia Vegara, which premieres this week), ‘The Gentlemen’ (from Guy Ritchie), ‘Eric’ (starring Benedict Cumberbach), ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’, ‘Cien Años de Soledad,’ from Colombia based on the novel by Gabriel García Márquez and Senna from Brazil."
Plot details regarding Squid Game season 2 are currently being kept under wraps. In the final moments of season 1, after winning the games and taking home the prize (and dying his hair bright pink for some reason), Seong Gi-hun seemed determined to put an end to the games altogether. Stars Lee Jung-jae (Seong Gi-hun), Lee Byung-hun (Front Man), Wi Ha-joon (Hwang Jun ho) and Gong Yoo (The Salesman) are all expected to return alongside a slate of new cast members.
Netflix has not specified a release date yet, but we can expect Squid Game season 2 to premiere sometime in 2024.
