The Boys star addresses fans who love Homelander: "You're f**ked up"
By Ashley Hurst
Antony Starr's portrayal of the sociopathic superhero Homelander in Prime Video's The Boys is one of the most celebrated performances in recent superhero history. We all love to hate Homelander, but for those who simply love him and choose to forget his numerous atrocities, Starr has one simple message: "You're f**ked up."
To but it simply, Homelander is just about as sadistic and vile as they come. Throughout the series he's committed dozens of unforgivable crimes, rarely showing any kind of empathy. He's manipulative, deceivingly charismatic, narcissistic and tyrannical. And to top it off, he does all of this as the leader of The Seven, the most powerful superhero group on the planet, who should be the beacons of light in the world.
Despite all of this, there are a couple of fans out there who love Homelander a little too much. Many of these viewers, Starr believes, are missing the point of his character's exaggerated reflection of real-life figures. "I think a lot of people missed the point, a lot of people on the right side of especially American politics didn't quite get what the character was representing, who and what," Starr said, per LadBible. "There's something quite funny to that 'cause it means they're dumb as a bag of hammers but I think that's one of the things about the character."
The Boys is a terrific reflection of modern culture, subverting the superhero genre and making it into something politically relevant and highly satirical. Starr has tried to develop his character into more than just a sadistic and brutal villain, but that's still what he is at bottom. Alas, some fans can't see past the surface of the character:
"We've tried to make it a little bit more complicated than just a villain and it somehow works. The weird thing is that I get lots of people coming saying they love Homelander, it's like 'you're f**ked up.'"
You've got to love Starr's brutal words. He's not holding back. The Boys season 4 is expected to premiere sometime in 2024, though Prime Video has not set a premiere date yet.
