Universal and Steven Spielberg's production company Amblin Partners are fast tracking a new Jurassic World movie, and it may have just found its director: Gareth Edwards, director of an impressive bunch of genre films including Godzilla (2014), Rogue One and last year's sci-fi epic The Creator.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Edwards is deep in talks with the studios to take on the Jurassic sequel following the departure of David Leitch (Bullet Train), who was briefly attached to the project in early February. Leitch reportedly parted ways with the next Jurassic movie because it's already pretty far along in the creative process, and "producers wanted to wield a stronger hand after the experiences ofJurassic World: Dominion." I'd be lying if I said that sentence didn't make me a little nervous, but after the incredible job Edwards did with The Creator — a film which cost only $80 million to produce but was comparable to movies with much higher price tags — I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

The next Jurassic World movie is being written by David Koepp, the screenwriter who penned both the 1993 original Jurassic Park movie as well as its first sequel, The Lost World. The latest movie is already several drafts in, so things are moving along pretty quickly. And they need to, because the studios have already announced a July 2, 2025 release date. The Jurassic franchise has pulled in over $6 billion at the box office since that first groundbreaking film, and it's clear that Universal is keen to keep the money flowing.

Details about the new Jurassic World movie are being kept under tight wraps for now. From the title, it sounds like it will be a sequel to the most recent run of movies, which starred Chris Pratt as velociraptor whisperer Owen Grady and Bryce Dallas Howard as former Jurassic World park operator Claire Dearing. The final movie in that trilogy, Jurassic World: Dominion, was billed as a huge crossover event film that saw Jurassic Park stars Sam Neill (Alan Grant), Laura Dern (Ellie Sattler) and Jeff Goldblum (Ian Malcolm) all reunited in one Jurassic movie for the first time since the original movie.

It's unclear if characters from any of the previous films would return for the new Jurassic World sequel. But with the speed that the studios are moving on this film, hopefully we'll find out more soon.
