The guy behind Saw and The Conjuring is remaking The Creature From The Black Lagoon

Universal is still trying to revive classic movie monsters for the big screen. Meanwhile, a new animated Ghostbusters show is coming to Netflix.

For a while now, Universal has been trying to make a cinematic universe based on classic movie monsters, and it hasn't been going very well, as anyone who saw the 2017 remake of The Mummy with Tom Cruise can tell you. But there have been some hits, like 2020's The Invisible Man, and the studio is forging ahead with films about the Wolf Man, Dracula and Frankenstein's monster in the offing.

Some of them look pretty promising; surely Guillermo del Toro can turn out an interesting Frankenstein movie, for instance. Now, Universal has drafted another battle-tested filmmaker to remake water-logged horror movie The Creature From The Black Lagoon: James Wan, who's had a big hand in horror franchises like Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring, not to mention the recent hit M3GAN. Obviously, the guy knows how to pack 'em in. He belongs in the MonsterVerse.

Actually, Universal is calling this the "Dark Universe," but that doesn't seem to have worked very well so maybe it's time for a rebrand. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wan pitched a Black Lagoon reboot as "a grounded, modernized retelling that will lean into visceral horror, while still paying respect to the original.” It could work. IT COULD WORK!

A new animated Ghostbusters TV show is coming to Netflix

Speaking of horror...well, kind of...Variety reports that Netflix is working on a new cartoon series based on Ghostbusters. The show will take its cues from more recent Ghostbusters movies like Afterlife and Frozen Empire, the ones starring Paul Rudd and Finn Wolfhard. I dunno if they're gonna be in the show, though.

To run the new series, Netflix has tapped Elliott Kalan, who worked on The Daily Show and Mystery Science Theater 3000. He's also on a podcast about movies called The Flophouse, where he called Ghostbusters: Afterlife "kind of mediocre,” according to The A.V. Club. Now he's got a chance to improve things.
