Invincible finished airing the final episodes of season 2 a few months ago, and now fans are waiting for the next installment. If the gap between seasons 1 and 2 is anything to go by, we must be very patient.

Looking ahead to the new season, however, star Ben Schwartz is excited to continue the story of his character, the Shapesmith, who's story has been expanded from the original Invincible comic books by Robert Kirkman. A martian shapeshifter, the Shapesmith takes the form of astronaut Russ Livingston and returns to Earth in his body. He uses his superpowers — including super stretchiness — to establish himself, becoming an honorary member of the Guardians of the Globe.

Speaking to ScreenRant, Schwartz explained how he landed the role. "I remember when Robert Kirkman told me what the character is," he said. "I wasn't aware of him in the graphic novel of the comics, but I'm a huge fan of that show, I think Invincible's so good – he said, 'Hey, do you want to play this character?'"

Once Schwartz — who's famous outside of Invincible for voicing Sonic the Hedgehog in the movies — learned more about the character, his interest accelerated. "He told me kind of what it was, I was like, 'Oh my God, this is so fun.'"

"Not only does he have these 'Plastic Man abilities', or Elastic Man, or Mr. Fantastic-type of stretching abilities and morphing abilities, but he is hiding that he's really an alien who's trying to pretend that he's a human. So, he's trying to fool everybody, but 100% doesn't fool. The second you hear him talk, he just overdoes it."

Ben Schwartz talks about his Invincible character the Shapesmith

The Shapesmith got himself into some perilous positions in Invincible season 2, but he remains alive. While Schwartz doesn't know exactly when and how his character will make further appearances, he's excited to get back to work:

"I'm excited to keep going too. He's still around, he hasn't bitten the dust yet, so I get to keep playing him until whatever part of the storyline takes him to a place where maybe he's not around anymore, but hopefully he stays for a long, long time."

Prime Video has not set a release date for Invincible season 3 yet, but the wait shouldn't be as crazy as the gap between seasons 1 and 2. Robert Kirkman has previously revealed that the production has been streamlined, meaning no more hefty delays. In the meantime, seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Prime Video.
