Netflix's wacky superhero show The Umbrella Academy will soon return for its fouth and final season. What can we expect? Well, now that the Hargreaves family has been stripped of their powers, the family must come to the terms of being 'normal.'
In the season 3 finale, the world of The Umbrella Academy got a hard reset. The apocalypse was averted, but now the Hargreaves family find themselves as regular, non-superpowered beings. According to showrunner Steve Blackman, the family coming to terms with being powerless is the struggle at the heart of the final season. “The first place I started with season 4 was: What happens if you were once a superhero and then suddenly you're not?” he told Entertainment Weekly.
All of the Hargreaves siblings were brought together and bonded through their unusual abilities. However, with the powers now gone, so is their initial link. "I think it's a challenge for all of them," Blackman said. "What might've brought them together initially is the fact that, as a dysfunctional family, they found some connection in their abilities. With those superpowers stripped away, who are they as a family?"
Some members deal with it better than others. For instance, Victor (Elliot Page) takes to being a non-superpowered human better than the rest of the siblings. “Victor is probably the one sibling who is most comfortable in his skin in season 4,” Blackman explained. “He’s doing better than any of the other siblings in terms of adjusting to his new life. He's the most accepting of their new reality.”
Check out the first look images from season 4 below, one of which features the family stranded by the side of the road. Despite their lack of powers, they stick together. “This just exemplifies the chaos of having them back together as a family,” Blackman said. “Clearly they've been in some kind of mishap and there they are again, trying to figure things out as a family. This sums up the madness and chaos of the season in one shot.”
The fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy premieres August 8 on Netflix. Not long now, folks!
