Earlier this week, we reported that it looked like filming on the upcoming third season of The Wheel of Time — Amazon Prime Video's adaptation of Robert Jordan's classic fantasy series — had wrapped up. Now, the cast is here to confirm our suspicions. Filming on season 3 is officially done!
Rosamund Pike (Moiraine), Marcus Rutherford (Perrin), Ayoola Smart (Aviendha), Josha Stradowski (Rand al'Thor) and Daniel Henney (Lan) are all on hand to tell us the good news: "That's a wrap on season 3."
Stradowski throws in a little tease, as well. "I'm very, very excited for the audience to see." And Henney goes step further with this promise: "It's going to be big."
The Wheel of Time season 3 is based on The Shadow Rising
If the show sticks to the source material, it should be big indeed. There are 14 books in The Wheel of Time series in all. The first season adapted the first book, The Eye of the World. The second season changed some things around to adapt the second and third books — The Great Hunt and The Dragon Reborn — as one season of TV. The third season is set to adapt The Shadow Rising, considered by many fans to be one of the better books in the series.
Without spoiling things too much, The Shadow Rising deeply expands the lore of the franchise. We'll learn more about the Aiel, the desert-dwelling people from whom Rand descends. The characters advance in their studies, and of course we'll see more of the Forsaken, powerful channelers in service to the Dark One. They were a highlight a season 2 and will only get more important, and more numerous, going forward.
Unfortunately, we don't have a release date for The Wheel of Time season 3 as of yet. It's still pretty early in the year, so it's not out of the question for new episodes to drop by the end of 2024. But given how much post-production work goes into this show, I wouldn't surprised if it got pushed back to 2025.
Beyond that, things are uncertain. The Wheel of Time will need more seasons if it wants to adapt all 14 books, but we haven't yet heard about Amazon renewing it for season 4. Cast member Rima Te Wiata (Sheriam Sedai) recalled something showrunner Rafe Judkins once told her about the possiblity of a fourth season. "Whether that happens or not, we just don’t know," he told her. "You’ve got to wait for things to be greenlit."
The second season of The Wheel of Time was an improvement on the first. If that continues, people will definitely want to see more. Here's hoping we gets news about a release date and a fourth season sooner rather than later. Until then, the first two seasons are avaialabe to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
