The Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski finishes new book about Geralt of Rivia

CD Projekt Red is working on a new Witcher video game and Netflix is making two more seasons of the TV show. We're getting new Witcher books, as well:

The Witcher season 4 on Netflix
The Witcher season 4 on Netflix

The Witcher series began humbly when author Andrzej Sapkowski published a short story about a monster-fighting warrior named Geralt of Rivia in the Polish magazine Fantastyka back in 1986. Nearly 40 years later, Sapkowski has written many stories along with several Witcher novels, and he's still at it. Speaking to Chimeres, the author confirmed that he's finished yet another book about Geralt. "I finished the book," he said. "It took me maybe two years, something like this.“

We've known that Sapkowski was working on a new Witcher book for awhile. According to Redanian Intelligence, the plan is for the book to come out this winter. If it's already finished, there's no reason to think that won't come to pass.

We don't have a title for the new book yet, nor do we have a synopsis. All we know is that it will star Geralt of Rivia. “The book is directly about Geralt, but I won’t say more," Sapkowski hinted. "It is outside the pentalogy.“

Sapkowski has written eight Witcher books before this. The first two, The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, collect his Witcher short stories. The next five make up The Witcher Saga, a longform series that takes us on an adventure around the Continent; that's "the pentalogy." They are Blood of Elves, Time of Contempt, Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow and The Lady of the Lake. Finally, there's Season of Storms, a standalone novel set during an earlier point in Geralt's adventures rather than after the end of The Witcher Saga. This new book is expected to be more like Season of Storms: a standalone story from earlier in Geralt's career.

If you want to find out what Geralt gets up to after the end of The Witcher Saga, you can always check out The Witcher video games from CD Projekt Red, which exploded in popularity in the 2010s and had a big influence on Netflix's decision to adapt Sapkowski's books into a TV show. The Witcher has been running on Netflix for three seasons now. The show has already adapted The Last Wish, Sword of Destiny, Blood of Elves and Time of Contempt. The upcoming fourth season will get going on the final three books in the original series, not counting Season of Storms, and a fifth season will wrap up the story.

Originally, Geralt of Rivia was played by Henry Cavill on the Netflix show, but come season 4 Cavill will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth. Expect new episodes sometime in 2025. A lot of fans were upset over the recasting news, but with Sapkowski continuing to write new stories about Geralt at different points in his life, maybe there's room for multiple interpretations.
