Watch the terrifying first trailer for Alien: Romulus
By Daniel Roman
Rejoice, fellow Alien fanatics! The first trailer for this year's upcoming Alien movie Alien: Romulus is here at last. Produced by original Alien creator Ridley Scott and directed by Fedé Alvarez (Don't Breathe), Romulus is set to take the franchise back to its sci-fi horror roots. Gone are the days of Aliens and Predators duking it out in a fashion better suited to a Marvel movie. If this new teaser is anything to go by, things are going to get pretty damn scary in Alien: Romulus. Watch the trailer below, then we'll discuss!
In space no can here you scream: As true now as it was in 1979
The Alien franchise has gone to some pretty weird places over the years, from prison planets to underground pyramids on Earth and, most recently, into the past with Ridley Scott's pair of prequel movies, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. But the Xenomorph is seldom more terrifying than when a bunch of people are trapped in close confines with it. That was the premise of Scott's 1979 Alien film, which saw a crew of space travelers led by Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) fight for their lives after one of the creatures gets loose on their ship.
Alien: Romulus looks to be tapping back into that formula. From the trailer, it looks like a spacefaring crew will similarly find themselves being hunted after an alien makes it on board. Here's the official description from 20th Century:
"The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful “Alien” franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. "
Alien: Romulus stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun) and Aileen Wu.
Spaeny revealed previously that Alien: Romulus is set during the 57-year gap between the first and second Alien movies. “It’s supposed to slot in between the first movie and the second movie,” Spaeny said while in the press trail for her movie Priscilla. “They brought the same team from Aliens, the James Cameron film. The same people who built those xenomorphs actually came on and built ours. So getting to see the original design with the original people who have been working on these films for 45-plus years and has been so much of their life has been really incredible.”
Alien: Romulus is out in theaters on August 16, 2024.
