The historical drama Vikings premiered on History back in 2013. It ran for six seasons, delighting audiences with the tale of Viking warrior Ragnar Lothbrok and his children. A spinoff series set 100 or so years afterward, Vikings: Valhalla, hasn't been as big of a hit, but it definitely has its fans, and Netflix is going to make them happy with a third and final season coming this summer.
Like Vikings before it, Valhalla is loosely inspired by real events, following the lives of people like Leif Erikson (Sam Corlett), Freydís Eiríksdóttir (Frida Gustavsson), and Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter) but putting them in situations that are a skosh more fantastically dramatic than what happened to them when they were alive in the 11th century. Action and drama are the name of the game, as we can see in the trailer above, which features lots of sword fighting, topless people, and papal intrigue.
When last we left our heroes and villains, Freydis had defeated the Christian nobleman Olaf, Lief Eriksen arrived in Constantinople, and Godwin and Gytha were married in London, meaning their future children will be in line for the throne of England. Many conflicts remain, but probably nothing some executions and battles with flaming arrows can't solve.
The third and final season of Vikings: Valhalla airs on July 11. This is a Netflix show, so the plan is for all episodes to drop at once. After that, there don't seem to be any more Vikings spinoffs on the table, so maybe Hollywood is done dramatizing this era of English history for a while. Between Vikings, Vikings: Valhalla and Netflix's own The Last Kingdom, you can get a very dramatic crash course on this era with the click of a button.
