There are a few characters in the world of science-fiction who shouldn't ever remove their helmets. There's Master Chief from the Halo franchise, where the TV show completely disregards the idea of never removing his helmet. And then there's Din Djarin, who's taken off his helmet very sparingly throughout The Mandalorian, a Star Wars TV show.
The writers of The Mandalorian understand the memo: Din Djarin mustn't remove his helmet, simply because “this is the way” of Mandalore. However, throughout the series, there have been a couple of poignant moments when he's taken off the helmet. These scenes come through necessity and make use of actor Pedro Pascal's impressive skills. Look no further than when Din Djarin removes his helmet to say goodbye to Grogu, his young charge, at the end of season 2. Everyone cried.
Fast forward another season — and a large role in The Book of Boba Fett — and Din Djarin never takes off his sacred helmet again. Turns out this was a deliberate move to make the bond between Djarin and Grogu feel even more special. "To answer your question succinctly, if he kept his helmet off after that point, it cheapens what he did when he said goodbye to Grogu," Brendan Wayne, the stunt double for Pedro Pascal, told Screen Rant.
"When Grogu puts his hand up and says, "Hey, take that off, I wanna see you." That doesn't mean as much. It's like saying "I love you," then you hear your significant other saying it to everybody, and you're like, what value does that have? That was his love letter to him."
Of course, Djarin and Grogu do reunite in season 3, but the weight of that one moment in the season 2 finale will be forever etched in our hearts. It certainly did its job.
The Mandalorian season 4 has yet to be officially announced. Whether it gets another season remains to be seen. But with that said, Lucasfilm has made a separate bombshell announcement. Yes, our favorite galactic duo will head to the big screen for The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is set to enter production sometime this year.
