Why the MonsterVerse is the Fast & Furious franchise, but with monsters

Fast & Furious has the nitrous oxide boost and the MonsterVerse has the radioactive fire breath.

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines and brace yourselves for a turbo-charged, scale-smashing comparison that's going to get your adrenaline pumping. If you thought the Fast & Furious franchise had cornered the market on high-octane thrills, allow me to introduce you to a little something that takes the excitement to colossal heights: Legendary's MonsterVerse.

Imagine all the action and camaraderie of Fast & Furious, but with Godzilla and King Kong in the driver's seat. Right? Right.

But, Cam, Fast & Furious has cars, hot chicks, handsome devils, and so much explosion. How can you even compare that to the MonsterVerse?

I'm so glad you asked.

The starting line: Characters with charisma (and scales)

Let’s kick things off with the stars of the show. In the blue corner, representing the Fast & Furious series, we have Dominic Toretto and his family, who've evolved from street racers to international super-spies with hearts of gold and nerves of steel. In the red corner, it’s my bestie Godzilla, his best frenemy King Kong, and a whole roster of titanic creatures that make Vin Diesel look like a Hot Wheels toy.

While Dom's commitment to family might pull at the heartstrings, there's just something about a 300-foot-tall lizard with atomic breath and a roar that makes every single strand of hair on my body stand up straight. And let’s be honest, when Kong swings a gigantic axe, it’s like every action movie trope on steroids.

Plot twists bigger than a skyscraper

Fast & Furious plots twist and turn like a high-speed chase through downtown LA, potholes included. We’ve got betrayals, long-lost brothers, and genetically enhanced villains. Exciting? Absolutely. But some twists are predictable enough that you might see some of the curves coming from 300 miles away.

Now, enter the MonsterVerse, where the plot doesn’t just twist, it stomps through cities, dives deep into the ocean, and battles across Skull Island. Every movie feels like the fate of the world truly hangs in the balance, not just from man-made threats, but from ancient titans whose motives are as deep and mysterious as the ocean trenches they emerge from.

So. Much. Action.

The Fast & Furious franchise certainly delivers the goods when it comes to heart-stopping stunts. Cars parachute out of airplanes, leap off cliffs, and defy the very laws of physics as if they were superheroes themselves. That’s all well and good until a gigantic monster tail whips a fighter jet out of the sky like it’s swatting a fly.

The MonsterVerse takes action sequences and super-sizes them. Each of Godzilla's footsteps is an earthquake, and all of Kong's roars echo like thunder. Buildings topple like dominos and military firepower that could obliterate small countries barely scratches the hide of these behemoths. Not to mention every city these Titans face off in is technically leveled and no Wonders are safe; I refer to the incredible suplex Godzilla performs on Kong in The New Empire. Chef's kiss.

Emotional impact: Tiny humans, giant hearts

The emotional connections between characters in Fast & Furious help drive the series. It’s all about family, loyalty, and sacrifice. Touching, right? But the MonsterVerse matches this with its own brand of emotional storytelling.

Who didn’t shed a tear when Kong found his ancestral home, or feel a surge of awe when Godzilla, illuminated by city lights, declared himself king once more? I could not have been the only one, right? The bond between these monsters and the people in the stories, like the one between Madison Russell and Godzilla or between Jia and Kong, infuses the larger-the-life story with human warmth.

Cultural icon status: Legends never die

Fast & Furious has undoubtedly left tire marks on popular culture with its memorable lines and blockbuster scenes. Godzilla and Kong have been pop culture icons for decades longer, representing deep-seated fears and aspirations in our collective psyche.

Godzilla's origins reflect nuclear anxieties while Kong’s brought us a vision of the mysterious wild. These creatures resonate on a level that goes beyond the thrill of the chase. They embody nature, power, and the unknown, themes that are universally compelling.

Both franchises bring joy and jaw-dropping moments to fans worldwide. But if you're looking for something that combines the thrill of high-speed chases with the awe-inspiring spectacle of giant monsters, the MonsterVerse is where you want to park your popcorn.
