Resident Alien season 4's teased spinoff looks less likely than ever in 2026

We can dream, but that might be all we can ever do.

Resident Alien ended its four-season run, relatively on its own terms, in August 2025. However, before Alan Tudyk's sci-fi dramedy came to a close, the finale snuck in an obvious attempt to manifest a spinoff show. There's been no official confirmation that the implied project will happen, but it hasn't been officially ruled out, either. That being said, with how little information there still is on the speculative Resident Alien spinoff, it's probably little more than a pipe dream. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't realistically see that changing.

If you're missing Resident Alien and even the thought of rewatching it for the zillionth time is starting to sound unappealing, I highly recommend Apple TV's Murderbot as a suitable replacement. It makes use of a similar blend of offbeat comedy and deceptively high-concept sci-fi worldbuilding. It's probably the closest thing we'll ever get to more episodes of Resident Alien. As mentioned above, the spinoff isn't technically dead in the water, but it's looking progressively less promising.

Resident Alien season 4 finale's Mike & Liv spinoff tease explained

For those of you who don't remember this scene or perhaps didn't pick up on its importance, let me give you a brief overview. Season 4 was especially important for Corey Reynolds' Sheriff Mike Thompson, who had spent most of Resident Alien staunchly believing that there was a rational explanation for all the strange goings on in Patience, Colorado. In other words, he refused to believe in aliens, even in the face of overwhelming evidence.

By contrast, Deputy Liv Baker (Elizabeth Bowen) is an avid ufologist throughout the show's run. By the end of season 4, they're both on the same page, with Mike ready to accept that there's more to the universe than meets the eye. His knowledge of alien life means both he and Liv are approached by a shady government organization, seeking their services.

While they would retain their roles as Patience's law enforcement, Resident Alien teases an X-Files-esque spinoff with Mike and Liv in central roles as secret agents. There is even what is essentially a canonical reveal that fairies exist within the show's universe. So, the follow up wouldn't just be limited to the sci-fi genre label that it would inevitably still share with its parent program.

What Resident Alien's showrunner has said about spinoffs and revivals

The ending of Resident Alien is obviously still pretty fresh. It hasn't even been a year since the finale aired. Still, striking while the iron is hot can often be an effective method in maintaining interest in a franchise, and showrunner Chris Sheridan certainly seemed interested in telling more stories from the world of Resident Alien in the wake of the show's conclusion — including for Mike and Liv. Speaking with Screen Rant shortly after season 4 ended, Sheridan spoke about his desires for Resident Alien's future.

"That almost writes itself," said Sheridan, speaking about the potential of a Mike and Liv spinoff. However, he also spoke more broadly about the Resident Alien universe, confirming that there are "more stories to tell. " Speaking about Harry's growth, and that Tudyk's character still hasn't fully figured out what it means to be human, Sheridan certainly seemed eager to return to the franchise someday to continue that arc.

He specifically mentioned being interested in doing a revival years down the line, in the form of a miniseries or a movie: "There are new stories to tell." Sadly, he qualified all of this by also explaining, "I don't know if we'll ever get the chance to tell them," but he remains convinced he'll "get the chance to do a movie at some point." I will admit, a catch-up with these characters down the line does sound more appealing than a spinoff that would just basically be Resident Alien without its main character.

Why Sheridan's Resident Alien revival plans might be a bit too optimstic

Resident Alien is one of my favorite shows from recent years. It was unique in the stories it was telling and how it was telling them. That said, I'm fully aware that the show only has a relatively small following, despite how great it is. It was constantly battling for renewal between its first three seasons on Syfy. It even took a switch to USA Network for the show to get a farewell season after Syfy dropped it. So, while the show will invariably find new audiences as the years go by, I think it's unlikely to ever become anything more than a beloved cult classic.

If anything, Sheridan and company were lucky to get a final season to round out the story. Years down the line, I don't see anyone giving the green light and funding to a revival of a show that was never all that popular in the first place. Even Firefly, another Alan Tudyk sci-fi show, which has ascended to legendary status in the genre's pantheon of greats, still hasn't managed to come back to catch up with the Serenity crew. I would certainly welcome any kind of Resident Alien sequel or spinoff, but I'm not holding my breath for it to ever happen.

Resident Alien is streaming now on Peacock.
