Robert Kirkman wants 8 seasons of Invincible, but it "could be 10"

Invincible creator Robert Kirkman foresees Prime Video’s animated adaptation of his comic running for around eight seasons...or more, if we're lucky.

Prime Video's animated adaptation of Robert Kirkman's comic Invincible is one of the finest superhero shows out there today, which is a huge achievement given the glut of Marvel and DC projects that exist. The series will debut its third season in 2025, with hopefully many more installments to come. On that front, Kirkman believes the team can faithfully complete the story within around eight seasons.

The good news about adapting Invincible compared to adapting Kirkman's other popular comic, The Walking Dead, is that his superhero comic is completely finished. The team has an ending to work towards. With The Walking Dead, Kirkman was still writing the comics long after the series premiered. For Invincible, he can set an accurate timeline for how long he wants it to continue for without having to worry about continuing the source material.

In an interview with Collider, Kirkman weighed in on the longevity of the Invincible TV show. He revealed that so long as Invincible has the backing of Prime Video (which is very likely), he and writer Simon Racioppa see it running for quite a while. "The way Simon and I have mapped out, where we would kinda follow the comic and where the breaks would be, roughly eight seasons. Could be seven, could be ten," he said, jokingly adding: "Or nine. I can be greedy."

And this is just for the core story. The animated series has already showed that it's willing to expand its horizons and remix storylines from the comic, rearranging the narrative structure for television. Looking ahead to season 3, Mark Grayson will don a new blue super-suit. The Viltrumite war still looms large, but on Earth, Mark crosses swords with Global Defence agency director Cecil Stedman. Prepare for the action to be dialled up to 11. Check out the trailer:

Invincible season 3 premieres its first three episodes on Thursday, February 6, with subsequent installments airing weekly through March 13th.
