Robert Pattinson has a hilarious Twilight comparison for his character in The Odyssey

It’s a more unorthodox comparison, but it actually makes sense.

On the surface, Antinous in The Odyssey and Jacob in Twilight are inherently different characters, but according to actor Robert Pattinson, the two actually have some parallels.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey isn’t just the most ambitious movie of the year; it’s one of the most ambitious in movie history. That’s not an overstatement either. Homer’s Odyssey is a near-3,000-year-old text, containing roughly 12,000 lines of poetry, divided into 24 books. The epic has influenced every facet of Western literature. Attempting to adapt it isn’t just making a movie, it’s breaking barriers and pushing filmmaking to its limits. If anyone is capable of delivering such a feat, it’s Nolan, the man behind The Dark Knight, Interstellar, Oppenheimer, and more.

The movie begins with Odysseus (Damon), King of Ithaca, embarking on the epic, decade-long journey home after the siege of Troy, where his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland) await him. During the voyage, he faces everything from Cyclops Polyphemus to Sirens.

In bringing The Odyssey to our screens, Nolan has assembled one of the biggest and most star-studded casts out there. Look no further than Matt Damon, Elliot Page, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Mia Goth, and Robert Pattinson. The latter, Robert Pattinson, plays Antinous, a youth and a potential suitor vying for Penelope’s hand in marriage — with an eye on Odysseus’ throne.

The Odyssey features a love triangle… similar to Twilight?

Antinous is undeniably a complex role to tackle, but for Pattinson, he found assistance in comparing it to a very different part he knows all-too-well. Speaking to MTV UK, he shared that people might actually be rooting for his character. “I keep comparing it—it’s kind of like Jacob in Twilight,” he said, laughing.

“What The Odyssey is about — Penelope just can’t make her mind up between the two guys and I’m just trying to like help her make a decision. It’s like, ‘It’s fine. He’s dead, get over it,’” Pattinson hilariously added.

Of course, despite a gluttony of franchise roles that stretch as far as playing Batman, Pattinson is perhaps still best known for his portrayal of Edward Cullen in the Twilight series, which spanned 2008 to 2012. The character he compared his Odyssey role to, Jacob, is Edward’s rival in the Twilight films, played by Taylor Lautner.

The social media embargo for The Odyssey was recently lifted, and early reviews are hugely positive. Praise ranges from deeming it an “absolute triumph,” to “flawless” and “breathtaking.”

The Odyssey opens in theaters on July 17.
