Rumor: Elden Ring movie in the works from A24 and Annihilation director Alex Garland?

News broke today that the rumored Elden Ring film has found a studio and a director. Do these whispers pass muster?

We've been hearing rumbles for a while now that an Elden Ring movie was in the works, which would bring the shattered Lands Between from FromSoftware's hit video game to life on the big screen. Elden Ring has sold upwards of 28 million copies around the world and has become the best-selling game in the developer's library; suffice it to say there's a rabid fanbase who would turn out if this movie ever actually happened.

And perhaps it shall. Today, scoop site Nexus Point News (via The Gamer) reported that the Elden Ring movie had found not only a studio, but a director as well. According to their anonymous sources, Elden Ring is in talks to be developed at A24, with Alex Garland serving as director. Garland is the screenwriter who penned 28 Days Later, as well as the director behind films like Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Civil War.

Now, this is plenty exciting...but you may have noticed that I didn't link to Nexus Point's original report. That's because Nexus Point News has already taken down their "exclusive" article about the Elden Ring movie and scrubbed all mention of it from their social media. I was already going to tell you to take this news with a grain of salt because they didn't talk at all about the source of this information, but after seeing the initial report go down I'll tell you to take it with a very large grain of salt.

Then again, MovieWeb has also confirmed with a different anonymous source that A24 is indeed in the process of developing an Elden Ring movie. (They were unable to confirm if Garland is attached.) It sounds like there may actually be some truth to this story, but until and unless we get a fuller accounting, we're still firmly in rumor territory.

Is Alex Garland actually directing an Elden Ring movie?

Since we've established that we're in rumortown, we may as well have fun while we're here! Would Alex Garland actually be a good fit for Elden Ring? He's directed some large projects in the past and done so with an artistic flair that has made him popular with critics and audiences alike. I would certainly not rule him out as a good candidate for an Elden Ring movie. And his last three films have been produced with A24, so there is a partnership there.

But if I'm being honest, it's a little hard to imagine A24 as a studio getting behind a massive fantasy story like Elden Ring. They're known for deeply artistic films, often leaning toward horror. While that would obviously fit Elden Ring, it's also as sprawling as anything else the fantasy genre has to offer, which is a little outside A24's usual purview. The base lore for Elden Ring was written by George R.R. Martin, after all.

Then again, there's no guarantee a movie would follow the games at all; that story's already been told. Maybe it would chronicle the fall of the demigod families that shattered the Lands Between in the first place? Or maybe it's about a gamer who plays too much Elden Ring until the lines between reality blur and they start hallucinating rolling sheep in their own neighborhood? Your guess is as good as mine.

As flippant as I'm being about this, we are very interested in any news about an Elden Ring movie. We're fans of the game, and George R.R. Martin has hinted at the possibility of a film. So while this latest report seems to have devolved with hilarious rapidity, we'll certainly have our ear to the ground for more concrete updates in the future.
