Rumor: Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djwadi not on board for new prequel show

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a new kind of Game of Thrones show that needs a new kind of sound.

Ramin Djawadi was a successful composer before he crafted the opening theme song for Game of Thrones, but that thing really put him on the map. Since then his career has exploded. In addition to composing many iconic songs played on Game of Thrones, he also worked on shows like Westworld, Eternals, 3 Body Problem, and the Game of Thrones prequel show House of the Dragon. And why not? The person who composed this banger should be rewarded:

That opening theme song is so memorable that HBO used it again for House of the Dragon; the third season of that show will air sometime next year. Soon, HBO will premiere a new Game of Thrones prequel series: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on George R.R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. And it sounds like this will be the first Game of Thrones show not to benefit from Djawadi's talents.

Right now, this is just a rumor reported by the X account House the Dragons, which keeps its ears to the ground listening for any new developments with the show. But it's a rumor I believe, both because House the Dragons is reliable and because A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a different sort of Game of Thrones show that will need a different sort of sound. While Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon are big, epic stories about rival powers fighting for control of Westeros, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is about a knight and his squire wandering the country looking for work. Dunk, the main character, is not high-born. The show is set some 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones, when dragons have died out. The cast of characters is much smaller and the tone lighter than what fans are used to. It will be a new kind of Game of Thrones show, so I'm surprised that HBO would want to hire a new composer.

As for who that might be, House the Dragons has heard that it's Dan Romer, an Emmy-nominated composer who's worked on shows, movies, and video games like Luca, Station Eleven, Beasts of the Southern Wild and Far Cry 5. That's a pretty diverse resume, and if Romer is indeed working on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, I'll be curious to see what he brings to the Game of Thrones universe when the show airs sometime later this year. We don't have an exact release date yet, but that might change soon:
