Obi-Wan Kenobi was one of the stranger Star Wars projects at Disney. On the one hand, it marked a fun return for some franchise veterans, with Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen both coming back to play Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker respectively. That said, the story, which bridged the gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, felt a little unnecessary.
Season 1 debuted way back in 2022. It left room for a second outing, but Disney went quiet on the project very quickly. It was presumed that the series would end with one season. In terms of reviews, Obi-Wan Kenobi received a lot of praise from critics; when it came to viewership, its debut even surpassed the premiere of The Mandalorian season 2. On paper, it more than deserved to be renewed, but Disney did bill the series as limited.
The rumor of another season comes from insider Daniel Richtman, who's well-known in the industry for his inside knowledge of streamers. His report is pretty vague, but the big reveal is that Disney is eyeing Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2, though no release date or production timeline has been set. In other words: watch this space.
Ewan McGregor wants to return for Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2!
If one thing is for sure, it's that Ewan McGregor himself is totally down to return to the galaxy far, far away. In a previous interview with Variety, back when there weren't any rumors circulating about a second season, the actor revealed that he'd be interesting in coming back. "I would love to do the second season, but there’s no talk of it yet," he said. "There is a lot going on at Disney."
There's a part of me that thinks they've already squeezed enough story out of his chracter. I mean, what's Kenobi going to do, fight Vader 100 times over? However, there's also a feeling of 'why not'? Season 1 was jam-packed with fan-service galore. Let them double down on it in a second season.
