The BBC's iconic science fiction series Doctor Who has been on our screens for over 60 years. The long-running British series has released a steady stream of content since its revival in 2005, but now, two decades after it returned to our screens, showrunner Russell T Davies admits that another pause could be very much be in the pipeline...although nothing is confirmed.
Of course, fans shouldn't be too worried about the series going on another hiatus. Doctor Who isn't exactly the type of series to get altogether axed. The series has engrained itself in modern British myth. But don't take it from me. Speaking to BBC's Newsround, Davies weighed in on the immense, timeless legacy of the Whoniverse.
"I kind of know that the Doctor’s reached the status of, like, Robin Hood. Sometimes there might be a pause, and during that pause, the viewers of Newsround now will grow up a few years and start writing stories and they’ll bring it back,” Davies explained. “So I have absolute faith that that will survive because I am living proof of it and that’s what happens to good ideas. No good idea ever dies.”
Doctor Who has just returned for its "second" season since being re-rebooted by Davies. The new series marks the return of Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, alongside new companion Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu). The season premiere, "The Robot Revolution," while not amazing, was pretty decent.
After a mixed bag of a debut season at Disney+, Davies and the crew are hoping for a distinct improvement in viewership this time around. The Disney deal is somewhat in flux at the moment, but even so, Disney will air a new Doctor Who spinoff series, The War Between the Land and the Sea, later this year.
As for season 3, nothing has been confirmed yet. In a recent interview with Radio Times, Davies admitted that there's been “no decision after season two” but that he "hopes" and is "dying to find out" if it'll get a renewal at the House of Mouse.
For the record, while Davies is calling this season the second, it's the fifthteen season since the show was originally rebooted in 2005. And if we go all the way back to the beginning of the show, it's the 41st season. The show has been on for a long time. New episodes of Doctor Who air weekly on Disney+.
