It's been confirmed that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 will end the divisive Paramount+ show. Despite a blueprint that could have allowed the story to last far longer, it seems the poor fan response has contributed at least somewhat to Starfleet Academy's early demise. The development doesn't come as a huge shock, but it is worrying. From here, it's tricky to really know how best to proceed.

Starfleet Academy season 2 has already wrapped and is expected to land in 2027. It remains to be seen if it will have a satisfying ending, as the final run of episodes could conclude with an implied future that will now never come to pass. I know many fans won't be let down by either possibility, because so many of them quit the show, or simply never gave it a chance. However, I really hope it gets to end in a way that doesn't feel incomplete. Regardless, Star Trek is now in a worrying place.

Starfleet Academy was Star Trek's last tangible way forward

Star Trek: Discovery revived the TV branch of the franchise in 2017, and it's been a constant stream of content ever since. It hasn't all been equally successful, but Paramount has been relentless in its commitment to the franchise. Now, for the first time since Discovery, there aren't any Star Trek movies or TV shows in active production. There are still episodes of Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy to release, but then that's it.

Because Starfleet cadets often spend at least four years in training before active duty, Starfleet Academy was generally expected to last for four seasons. This would have meant one run of episodes per school year. That's no longer the case. While it was known for a while that two seasons would be made, I'm sure I wasn't the only one who thought the show would end up twice that long when all was said and done. Starfleet Academy had its flaws, but it wasn't cancel-worthy.

Now, 2027 becomes an especially grim year for Star Trek, unless something big changes. A shortened Strange New Worlds season 5 will end the series with just six episodes, and now there's also the risk that Starfleet Academy will whimper out of existence without a proper ending. At least if season 3 had been renewed, there'd be more Star Trek to look forward to in 2028.

Star Trek's potential leadership change could overhaul the franchise (for the worse)

Producer Alex Kurtzman has been overseeing the franchise since J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek reboot movie. Many fans have openly criticized the Kurtzman era, although not every complaint has been warranted. He didn't just help bring Star Trek back to the small screen, but he updated the saga and brought it to a new generation of fans. Still, with his contract reportedly set to end in 2026, frustrated Trekkies who constantly complain about Kurtzman's creative direction could see their biggest wish granted if a replacement is selected.

The cancelation of Starfleet Academy certainly doesn't bode well for Kurtzman's fate, although it's yet to be confirmed if he'll vacate his role in the near future. Let's assume for a moment that he does leave, though, and consider what that could mean. Kurtzman's successor will have their own take on what Star Trek should be, and that's not necessarily a good thing.

While the Kurtzman era hasn't been universally successful, he did oversee a lot of great stuff being added to the franchise. Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Strange New Worlds are all inarguably peak Star Trek. A newcomer may want to make their mark on Star Trek's next string of projects, which could result in a decision to ignore, alter, and or even scrub certain events introduced by Kurtzman from the established timeline.

Given how many times Kurtzman has already done this in his shows, another figure coming in and doing the same thing could result in the Star Trek franchise coming out the other side looking like a slab of narrative Swiss cheese. When stories like Star Trek last as long as they do, there are bound to be some plot holes and inconsistencies, but the fewer there are, the better. As such, I hope Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's cancelation isn't a sign that Kurtzman's time in charge is over — stability is key here when it comes to leadership.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1 is streaming now on Paramount+. Season 2 is expected to premiere in 2027.
