Selena Gomez channels Daenerys Targaryen in clip from Emilia Pérez?

Does Selena Gomez yelling in Spanish sound a lot like Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones yelling in Dothraki? You decide:

Emilia Pérez is a movie musical drama about a cartel kingpin in Mexico who transitions to become a woman. Selena Gomez plays their wife Jessi. The movie has gotten a lot of buzz recently, having won a slew of awards at the Golden Globes, including Best Picture (Musical of Comedy).

For the film, Gomez — who grew up speaking Spanish but lost her fluency as she got older — had to relearn the language. Recently, a clip of Gomez playing an intense scene in Spanish went viral after TikToker nicozad played it alongside a clip from Game of Thrones where Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) shouts at her Dothraki followers in their native, entirely made-up language. Check it out:

The Daenerys clip is from Episode 606 of Game of Thrones, "Blood of My Blood," FYI. Obviously if you know Spanish (or, less likely, if you know Dothraki), these two clips won't sound the same, but if you're like me and don't much of a grasp on either, I'll admit they sound pretty similar! Gomez and Clarke have a similar rasp in their voice when they raise it. I'd follow either into battle.

Gomez has actually gotten criticized for not sounding convincing speaking Spanish in the movie — a lot of the comments on the original TikTok video bring this up — although her character is American-born. In any case, Gomez has promised that Emilia Pérez won't be her last Spanish-language project.

As for Clarke, she's long since moved on from Game of Thrones, although a new suite of actors have donned platinum blonde wigs and learned fictional languages for HBO's prequel series House of the Dragon. We've heard a lot of people speaking High Valyrian on that show, but have yet to hear any Dothraki. So yes, Emilia Clarke learned two fake languages to play Daenerys on Game of Thrones.
