We've known for a while that Phoebe Waller-Bridge, of Fleabag fame, was developing a TV show based on Tomb Raider, the video game series about globe-trotting adventurer Lara Croft. It would air on Prime Video, Amazon's streaming service. Late last year, it looked like Game of Thrones veteran Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) was first in line to play the lead role. Now the whole show might be "dead."
This comes from sources at The Daily Mail. "I hear that it is not going ahead," said a mystery person with knowledge of the situation, maybe. Amazon itself hasn't confirmed anything, so we are all living in Rumorville right now. If you're going to be here awhile, I hear the hotels are nice...but I can't confirm that.
It's true that Amazon has been shaking things up lately; Jennifer Salke recently exited her role as head of Amazon MGM Studios, which could put projects started under her tenure in danger. Salke signed Phoebe Waller-Bridge to a very lucrative deal at Amazon back in 2019, when Waller-Bridge was red-hot following the success of Fleabag. The deal has become something of a joke in Hollywood circles, since Waller-Bridge has produced all of...let me check my notes...nothing for Amazon in the years since, all while the company pays her millions of dollars. Word is that Amazon was also frustrated with Salke for failing to do anything with the James Bond franchise, which Amazon has kinda-sorta controlled since 2022 when it bought MGM Studios. So maybe shows like Tomb Raider were given the axe when Salke left, and Amazon will start fresh.
Or maybe the show is fine, I dunno; Rumorville is a confusing place to live. We'll bring you more information as we learn it.
Prime Video has had a number of genre hits over the years, including Invincible, Reacher and The Boys. As long as Amazon renews the high fantasy epic The Wheel of Time for more seasons, we'll be pretty happy:
