Squid Game season 3 will explore the "bottom parts of human nature"

Can Squid Game get any darker? If you listen to creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, yes.

Netflix's enormously popular Korean survival drama Squid Game wraps up on June 27 with one final round of games. The epic conclusion will no doubt see the people behind the brutal games get their comeuppance.

Season 2 ended on a grim note, with our main character Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) launching a failed rebellion against the sadistic people running the games. As punishment for his attempted coup, the Frontman returned to his position at the helm, but not before executing Gi-Hun's long-time friend Jung-bae, aka Player 390 (Lee Seo-hwan). But as dark as things got, it's all prelude to what we'll see in season 3. Check out the trailer below:

The final season will of course feature a few new games, all of them designed to encourage each player to stoop as low as possible. "In the case of season 3, I wanted to introduce games that could really show the lowest bottom of human beings, because the series itself is reaching its climax," series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told Entertainment Weekly. "I wanted very intense games to bring out the bottom parts of human nature."

As for what else fans can expect from season 3, Hwang Dong-hyuk plays it coy. However, he teases that the fear of heights will make a comeback. "In season 1, we had lots of games like Tug of War that really utilized height and the fear that this height gives, but in the case of season 2, we didn't have that element," he said. "That is why in season 3, I decided to introduce games that could really infuse fear in people with sheer height."

The final season completes protagonist Gi-Hun's story, developing his character almost beyond recognition from season 1. "Gi-hun goes through the most dramatic change, in terms of his character arc," Hwang says. "But I would like to point out that Myung-gi [Im Si-wan] in season 3, the father of the baby, he goes through a most dramatic character arc development. So look for Myung-gi's change as well."

Myung-gi was mostly a background character in the second season, part of a large cast of supporting characters, all of whom are at risk going into this final round. Other players include Hyun-Ju (Park Sung-hoon), Yonk-Sik (Yang Dong-geun) and Geum-Ja (Kang Ae-sim). And don't forget that former police officer Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-jun) is trying to break into the games from the outside.

While the original Squid Game show is concluding with its third season, Netflix continues to invest in the franchise. Most notably, legendary director David Fincher has his own English-language Squid Game series in the works. The series is not a remake, but a spinoff taking place in the same continuity of the main show, but elsewhere in the world. No details have been released yet, but reports suggest that Fincher and Netflix are in a rift regarding the show's title.
