Should WE be nervous?

The third and final season of Squid Game will air later this month on Netflix, and the stakes couldn't be higher. Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) is fighting for his life along with everyone else in the Squid Games, where only one person can walk away alive. Gi-hun would love to bust up the games from the inside, but the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) has thus far prevented that from happening. Meanwhile, the lives of new characters like Cho Hyun-ju (Park Sung-hoon) hang in the balance.

We'll know how it all ends very soon. "I am very nervous," Lee Jung-jae told The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet for Netflix's Tudum event. "I know that a lot of you out there are curious about what’s going to happen in season three, but all of us are more curious about how much you’re going to enjoy it. So I can’t wait, I’m very nervous.”

Lee Byung-hun said much the same thing, although he was took care to mention that he loved what he'd read in the scripts beforehand. “It was just perfectly written. It was such an intriguing and gripping read and I was once again in awe of director Hwang [Dong-hyuk]’s abilities,” he said. “I’m happy with how it ended but I know that the fans out there, they each have what they want to see happen, so I really am curious about how they’re going to respond to it. And I’m very nervous to find out.”

The pessimist in me hears them talking about how nervous they are and wonders if that means we're in for a disappointing ending. Basically, anything other than unqualified praise makes me nervous. But this is Squid Game, and I fully expect the show to take some big swings when it bows out on June 27.

Speaking a little more generally, Park Sung-hoon told Variety about their hopes for how Cho Hyun-ju's story will wrap up in season 3. Hyun-ju was one of the more interesting new characters, a special forces agent who was ostricized by her peers when she came out as a transgender woman. Characters like the motherly Jang Geum-ja (Kang Ae-shim) were wary of her at first. "[L]ater on in the show, Geum-ja warms up to her, she embraces her as one of her friends and family," Sung-hoon said. "I hope the viewers feel the same way about Hyun-ju, warming up to her as family. In season three, we go through a lot together, so we develop an even stronger bond.”

Squid Game creator has a spinoff idea

This next season of Squid Game will be the show's last. However, the series has been so successful for Netflix that we're hearing about potential spinoffs. David Fincher is reportedly working on an English-language spinoff, and original creator Hwang Gond-hyuk has another in mind.

“If I make [a] spin off, it will be a story happening between Season 1 and 2," Dong-hyuk told IndieWire. "There [was] a three years gap between Season 1 and 2. So, I want to show what they did for those times.”

Note that he said "if" I make a spinoff. We'll see how the final season of the main show goes and then revivisit this.
