Star Wars: Andor showrunner isn't shy about revealing how the show will end

The second and final season of Star Wars: Andor airs in a few months, and will take us up to the start of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Although Star Wars mostly aims itself at an all-ages crowd, over the years fans have wondered what a "mature" story set in the galaxy far, far away would look like. They found out with Star Wars: Andor, a Disney+ show about how title character Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) went from being a jaded loner to a committed member of the burgeoning Rebel Alliance.

The second and final season of Andor is coming next year. “He’s a man fully committed to the Rebellion,” Luna told Empire about where we'll pick up with Cassian. “It’s someone who has to ascend. There’s a huge mountain for him to climb in order to the guy we meet in Rogue One.”

Cassian Andor was first introduced to audiences in the 2016 Star Wars movie Rogue One, where he and other rebels were trying to steal plans for the Death Star. If you'd told me then that the male lead from that movie would one day headline what is quite possibly the best Star Wars TV show yet released, I would have asked who you are and why you're talking to me in this elevator. But several years later, it's come to pass.

By the way, speaking of Rogue One, it's no secret that Andor will end near the beginning of the movie, with Cassian Andor heading towards the mining colony on the Rings of Kafrene to look into the Empire's kyber crystal shipments, which leads him to discover the Death Star. "There's no mystery about where we're going," said Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy. "We are going to end up on that walk out to the ship with K-2 and go to the Rings of Kafrene and start Rogue One. But why is Cassian going? He's going because there's been some intel."

Star Wars: Andor season 2 will return us to the planet of Yavin

"K-2" is "K-2SO," Cassian's droid companion from Rogue One, played by Alyn Tudyk. We'll find out how the pair met in Andor season 2. “From an audience perspective, they’ve probably made their own story about how Cassian and K-2 got to work together,” Luna said. “It tells you a lot about Cassian that his best friend is a droid. And a droid he had to reprogramme. But how did that actually happen and who was he before? Those questions are going to be answered.”

The second season of Andor will take place over the course of several years. Once again, it will be divided into three-episode blocks, each of which tells its own mini-story. "We move in space more than ever — the amount of planets and sets you’re going to get to see. There are some familiar and new locations,” Luna teased. One of those locations will be Yavin, where the rebel base was located in the original Star Wars movie. "No-one has quite dealt with Yavin the way we will be doing it,” Luna hinted.

At this point, I trust the cast and crew of Andor to deliver on whatever plans they have. The second and final season kicks off on April 23, 2025, on Disney+.
